3. Each player has 16 pieces: a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.
4. The game starts with the pieces arranged in a specific pattern on an 8x8 chessboard.
5. Players take turns moving their pieces to different squares on the board according to specific rules.
6. Pawns can move forward one square at a time or two squares if they haven't moved yet.
7. Knights can move in an L-shape, two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly.
8. Bishops can move diagonally any number of squares as long as they stay on the same color.
9. Rooks can move horizontally or vertically any number of squares as long as they stay in the same rank or file.
10. The queen can move in any direction, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, any number of squares.

12. Players can capture their opponent's pieces by moving to a square occupied by the opponent's piece.
13. Pawns capture diagonally, while other pieces capture by moving to the square occupied by the opponent's piece.
14. A player can checkmate their opponent by placing their opponent's king in a position where it is under attack and has no way to escape.
15. If a player's king is in check, they must make a move to get out of check on their next turn.
